I don't talk about my dad's cancer diagnosis a lot in professional spaces. It feels personal in a way that's hard to package into a post or a pitch. But this week, something happened that made me feel like I had to say something.
This week, ZERO Prostate Cancer goes live with a text-based AI Powered Helper that my team built. People going through a prostate cancer diagnosis — or loving someone who is — can text 844-660-ZERO and get real, conversational support. Not a search engine. Not a FAQ page. An actual back-and-forth conversation that meets them where they are.
And for me, that's full circle in a way I didn't expect.
Here's the part I don't usually say out loud
In 2022, my dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer. And like most people who get that news, he was scared. The information was overwhelming. The treatment options were confusing. The emotional weight of it was a lot — for him and for all of us.
During his treatment, he used FRANSiS+, one of our earliest products. It's a simple concept — daily text messages that show up in your pocket and remind you that someone is thinking about you, that you can do this, that you're not alone. It doesn't give medical advice. It's not a clinical tool. It's just presence. Consistent, reliable presence delivered through a text message.
He told me later that it helped more than I realized. That on the hard days, those messages mattered.
I held onto that.
What we built for ZERO
When ZERO Prostate Cancer came to us, I understood the assignment immediately. Because I'd watched someone I love navigate exactly what their community navigates every day.
What they needed wasn't a generic tool that redirected people to a website. They needed an AI Powered Helper that could meet people in the middle of fear and actually have a conversation with them. So that's what we built.
It asks questions before giving answers. It has real conversations. It connects people to ZERO's support groups, mentors, and financial resources. And it's available at 2am when the fear doesn't care what time it is.
The thing about text messaging that people underestimate
I've been in this industry long enough to know that people still write off SMS as a "simple" channel. Like it's basic. Like it's beneath the sophistication of whatever app or platform they're building.
But here's what I know from watching my dad go through treatment, and from a decade of watching people use this channel: there is nothing simple about showing up in someone's pocket at the right moment. That's not a small thing. That's everything.
We scaled that for ZERO. And this week, it goes live.
Full circle
From one text message helping one person get through treatment — to an AI Powered Helper built to support an entire community.
I don't know how else to describe it except that it feels like exactly what we were supposed to build.
If you're a nonprofit, healthcare organization, or mission-driven institution that serves people in critical moments — I'd love to talk about what this kind of support could look like for your community.
Because everyone deserves to feel like someone's there. And now, at scale, they can.
