An SMS sender ID is the identifier a recipient sees as the "from" line of a text message. In many countries, businesses can send from an alphanumeric sender ID, a name like ACMEBANK, instead of a number. In the United States, they cannot: US carriers require every A2P message to originate from a real, provisioned phone number, whether that is a short code, a 10DLC number, or a toll-free number.

The Three Sender ID Types
- Numeric sender ID. A phone number: 10 digit long code, toll-free number, or 5 to 6 digit short code. The recipient can usually reply. This is the only sender ID type supported for A2P messaging on US carrier networks.
- Alphanumeric sender ID. A string of letters and numbers, typically up to 11 characters, such as SCHOOLALERT. Supported in many countries across Europe, Asia, and elsewhere. Alphanumeric IDs are one-way: recipients cannot reply to them.
- Shared or system numbers. Pools of numbers used by some platforms where the sender identity rotates. US carriers have moved away from this model for A2P traffic because rotating identity defeats accountability.
Why the US Requires Real Numbers
The US rule is a policy choice by carriers, coordinated through industry frameworks rather than a single statute, and it serves three goals:
- Accountability. Every A2P number is tied to a registered brand, through The Campaign Registry for 10DLC, the verification process for toll-free, or the campaign approval process for short codes. - Two-way capability. A real number can receive replies, which supports STOP and HELP keyword handling required by the CTIA Messaging Principles and Best Practices, and enables genuine conversation.
- Spoofing resistance. Alphanumeric IDs are easy to imitate: nothing stops a bad actor abroad from sending as a trusted brand name. Requiring provisioned numbers ties identity to infrastructure that carriers control.
The tradeoff is that US recipients see digits, not names, so recognition has to come from other signals.
How International Alphanumeric Sender IDs Work
Outside the US, alphanumeric sender IDs are common, but the rules vary sharply by country:

Organizations messaging internationally must check each destination country's sender ID registration requirements. Sending with an unregistered ID in a registration-required country commonly results in the message being blocked or the sender ID being rewritten by the carrier.
Sender ID and Deliverability
In the US system, the sending number is the identity, so its registration status directly affects whether messages arrive:
- Registered traffic is trusted traffic. A 10DLC number with completed brand and campaign registration, a verified toll-free number, or an approved short code travels in a vetted lane.
- Unregistered traffic is filtered. A2P messages from unregistered long codes face aggressive spam filtering and blocking.
- Consistency matters. Sending from one consistent number lets recipients save the contact and recognize future messages, and gives carriers a stable identity to trust.

Making a Number Recognizable
Since US organizations cannot put their name in the "from" field, recognition comes from practice:
- Brand every message. Start messages with your organization name. This is also a CTIA best practice: recipients should always know who is texting them.
- Use one consistent number. Publish it on your website, in emails, and at sign-up so subscribers can save it as a contact.
- Tell subscribers to save the contact. A saved contact displays your name on the recipient's own phone, which is the closest US equivalent to an alphanumeric ID and is entirely under the subscriber's control.
- Set expectations at opt-in. When people know which number will text them and why, unfamiliar-number hesitation drops.
- Consider local presence. A 10DLC number with a familiar local area code reads differently to a community than an anonymous number.
Security-sensitive organizations should also note what sender identity does not do: a recognizable number is not authentication. Recipients should be reminded that your organization will never ask for passwords or payment codes by text, a practice covered further on our security page.
Sender ID Registration Requirements by Destination
For organizations that message beyond the US, sender ID handling becomes a per-country compliance matter. The general pattern:
- Registration-required markets. Several large markets require alphanumeric sender IDs to be registered with a national regulator or carrier registry before use, with documentation of the brand and use case. Unregistered traffic is blocked or has its sender ID rewritten to a generic value.
- Open markets. Some countries permit dynamic alphanumeric IDs with no pre-registration, though carriers still filter content and volume patterns.
- Number-only markets. The US and Canada require provisioned numbers, as this article covers, and a few other markets follow the same model.
- Rewriting markets. A number of destinations deliver foreign traffic but substitute a local numeric ID, which means your recipients see an unfamiliar number regardless of what you configured.
Practical consequences for program design: maintain a per-country sender strategy rather than assuming one identity travels, budget lead time for registration-required destinations, and test actual delivery in each target country before launch, because the displayed sender is ultimately decided by the destination network, not by your platform settings. Your messaging provider should be able to tell you, per country, what registration is required and what your messages will display.
What Recipients Actually Experience
It helps to see the system from the phone's side. When your registered 10DLC message arrives, the recipient's device shows the sending number, checks it against saved contacts, and, on modern devices, may surface spam warnings if the number has drawn complaints. Nothing in that chain displays your organization's name unless the recipient saved the contact or the message body says it.
That is why the first line of every message carries the identification burden. Compare the two experiences: a text from an unknown number reading "Reminder: your appointment is tomorrow at 10" forces the recipient to guess, while "Riverside Clinic: your appointment is tomorrow at 10. Reply C to confirm" identifies itself, invites a reply, and builds the association that makes the next message recognized. Multiply that difference across every send and it becomes measurable in engagement and complaint rates, which in turn feed the reputation systems deciding how your future traffic is treated. Frequently Asked Questions
Can any US business get its name shown instead of a number?
No. US carriers do not support alphanumeric sender IDs for A2P messaging. The name a recipient sees, if any, comes from their own saved contacts or from RCS branding features where available; standard SMS from any US organization displays the sending phone number.
What about the branded messages I see from some big companies?
Those are typically RCS Business Messaging or messages the recipient's phone matched to a saved or suggested contact. RCS, a successor messaging standard, supports verified brand names and logos on supported devices, but it is a separate channel from SMS with its own verification process.
Why do my international messages show a different sender than I configured?
Some destination carriers rewrite unregistered or unsupported sender IDs into a generic numeric ID. If a country requires sender ID registration and yours is not registered, rewriting or blocking is the standard result.
Is caller ID spoofing legal for texts?
Sending texts with misleading or inaccurate caller ID information with intent to defraud, cause harm, or wrongfully obtain anything of value is prohibited under the Truth in Caller ID Act (47 U.S.C. 227(e)). Legitimate A2P messaging never involves altering the displayed number.
Does the sender ID affect my compliance obligations?
